Sir Edmund Percival Hillary, KG, ONZ, KBE (20 July 1919 – 11 January 2008), was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer and philanthropist. On 29 May 1953 at the age of 33, he and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers known to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, led by John Hunt. He was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.

Hillary became interested in mountaineering while in secondary school, making his first major climb in 1939, reaching the summit of Mount Ollivier. He served in the RNZAF as a navigator during World War II. Before the successful expedition in 1953 to Everest, he had been part of a reconnaissance expedition to the mountain in 1951 and an unsuccessful attempt to climb Cho Oyu in 1952. As part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition he reached the South Pole overland in 1958. He would later also travel to the North Pole.

Following his ascent of Everest he devoted much of his life to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust, which he founded. Through his efforts many schools and hospitals were built in this remote region of Nepal. Read more

Front: Chiang Kai-Shek

Chiang Kai-shek, also known as Chiang Chung-cheng, was born on October 31, 1887, at Hsikow Township, Fenghua County, Chekiang Province.

In 1965, President Chiang Kai-Shek planned to build an international level monument, in order to commemorate the founding father Dr. Sun Yat-Sen and the long standing Chinese culture. Therefore, officials, scholars, and experts were gathered as a committee to execute the proposal. After several researches and consultations, the site was chosen to be on Mount Yangming, the start of mountains in Taiwan.
The architect Hsiou Tse-Lan designed the Chung-Shan Hall after she carefully listened to Chiang and the first lady's idea. Because the site is in sulfur area, and base is soft, and the machineries were not very advanced, the tasks became extra difficult. However, with the enthusiasm and patriotism of all the personnel, the Hall was completed from 10/2 1965 to 11/6 1966. The 1 year construction duration of this magnificent monument even marks the record.
The site occupies 18129 square metres, and the hall itself take 13583 square metres. The Hall is based on imperial style, and the roof is covered by green glazed glass tiles.

The Beit Eddin palace complex, Lebanon's best example of early 19th century Lebanese architecture, was built over a thirty year period by Emir Bechir El-Chehab II, who ruled Mount Lebanon for more than half a century.
With its arcades, galleries and rooms decorated by artists from Lebanon, Damascus and Italy, this building is considered a model of eastern architecture.
It has decorated ceiling, colorful mosaic floors, luxurious Ottoman baths, numerous glass-studded cupolas, harem suites overlooking the wonderful valley of Deir El-Qamar, a guest house in which the French poet Lamartine once dwelt, water jets and wonderful colonnades.
Today the palace houses a museum of feudal weapons, costumes and jewelry as well as an archaeological museum and a museum of Byzantine Mosaics.
